I've got a 1970 f250 with the 390 and it's got a couple of exhaust leaks on the manifold. I'm gonna fix them but was thinking about putting on headers. Any suggestions about what brand and if I should go with a 2 into 1 or keep it a true dual setup??
The dynomax ones I bought hit the motor mount frame brackets on both sides. Have non standard exhaust port gaskets and are impossible to install/remove the starter with them bolted in place. You have to hold the starter and the header and do the swap-a-roo in the truck. Neither will go in place with the other installed. Im going back to stock manifolds.
One thing that happens when you keep runninf with an exh leak is the head manifold gasket area gets burn out and unless you have have the head exh manifold mounting area shaved off to a nice fresh surface the gasket will leak again until you do it right.
Sanderson make a nice header that don't use any gaskets just High temp RTV Although they our block hugger shorties. And yes you'll need to run a mini-starter if you want you be able to change it out with the headers on. Most header co. don't care if you have to emove them changing a starter out. But yrs ago most were designed as user friendly.
I ran a pair for just over 20 yrs. Then went back to the stock logs for a few yrs then went and got the sanderson ceramic coated ones..And the best thing is they dropped right in from the top. Would I do it again Yup with 2.1/2" pipes a long with a cross over pipe.. my 2 cents

So, Orich, you're saying that, in your opinion, the Sanderson ceramic coated manifolds/headers would be the best way to go? Also, a friend, who owned a 69 f250 said to go to a 2-1 and a good muffler for the proper back pressure and to make it run better?
I like the sanderson shorties. I had some black-jack long tube headers on over 20 yrs and could remove oem starter. Back psi the cross over pipe balances this out. But you may have troubles if you went any larger that 2.1/2" duels pipes. I'm also running 07 mustang mufflers that did add some good sounds plus a few more ponies that I noticed..my 2cents

This is a bit unrelated, but the PO installed long tube headers, true duals, and cheapo glasspack or "turbo" mufflers on my 302. Its way too loud for me.
Would you say the stock mustang mufflers are a lot quieter than the cheap $20 mufflers you get from Autozone? I don't like my loud exhaust at all, and was considering getting new mustang mufflers.
No GT mustangs our pretty loud since there not going through Cats that would be in the systems on the mustangs. 05-07 Mustang muffers our said to out perform or as good and a little quieter then flowmasters.. So don't think you would like them...

I will probably just end up getting another set of these cheap turbo mufflers, and use the old ones as resonators. They aren't too loud for the first year until they burn out, but I'll probably have a different motor and exhaust in another year.
I've had a set of Hedmans on my 390 for 12 yrs, and no probs. Even took them off of the old block, and used them on rebuilt 390. No leaks, or stuck bolts if you use anti seize when you install. I did also hung a Jegs mini starter on it because of difficulty installing stock starter. had to unbolt pass header, motor mount, jack motor up to get it out. Now if the mini ever goes, don't have to do all that. Also wrapped starter with heat cloth.
I have factory manifolds with 2 1/4 true duals to the back with V-FORCE mufflers(equivalent of a FLOW 40) And was dissapointed at the volume i wanted the muscle car roar not a wimpy grrr lol. But a 302 bored to a 347 should be LOUD!!!
But your still running stock exh mamifolds that reduce a lot of flow headers will give to a little more of what your missing in the sound you wanted.. You get what you build. How does a dog bark with a mussel on ?? my 2 cents
