hose on filter housing?

I was checking the air filter on my truck today and noticed a hose that runs out of the passenger side of the filter box, loops back around to the back of the engine just above the turbo downpipe, and seems to draw air in from right there.

I thought this was odd so I pulled up the "Air Management System" PDF from the 6.4l Bible, and that hose does not exist in those pictures of the engine (page three of the PDF).

Does everyone have this? Was this part of some TSB at some point? I'm guessing it's meant to draw air from around the turbos for cooling reasons. It just goes against reason to draw hot air into the intake like that if it can be avoided.

My 2008 F350 job build #3 has it. That should be a secondary hose, it is used if the main inlet starts getting filled with dust/dirt. That is the way I understand it.

I don't see anything that would prevent it from sucking in extremely hot air at all times. Maybe it's meant to bring hot air into the airbox to melt snow/ice if it starts building up on the filter itself.

The hose you are seeing is for warm air recirculation. Aftermarket filters have what amounts to a delete for this, where you can either run it into the airbox as if stock or plug it in to the side of the box in a "dummy port". This is so you can run it same as stock in the winter months and remove it during warmer times. I have the S&B intake on my truck and I have kept the hose in the dummy port since install.

I have it too. I assumed it was to warm the air entering the filter assembly at an idle. Since the main inlet tube routes towards the grill Im sure it takes over when the vehicle is in motion. The old carburetor cars used to have one of these that went directly to the manifolds to help it warm up. Gotta figure this is something similar. No valve or anything inside it but again I think the ram air affect over rides the smaller tube once in motion.
