Post Exhaust Manifold versus Headers

I am new to this site and have a 86 F150 300-6. Wondering if I should keep my current exhaust manifold, obtain a 87 or later split exhaust manifold or go with a header? Would like to go with hi-flow cat and new exhaust and maybe a different carb to replace the YF Feedback model. I've heard a header creates a lot of heat but perhaps the current exhaust manifold won't allow me many choices in the exhaust pipe setup. Will a 87 or later manifold be a hassle to put on? Any benefits in the performance area? Your help is appreciated.

Exhaust Manifold versus Headers

I'm not sure what year, but a newer 300 came with factory headers that had dual exits that work well. This coupled with a 2 1/4 set of duals and free flowing mufflers would improve power a little. You don't want to go too big on the pipes, because that would slow down exhaust velocity. The improvement in power will only be slight, unless you go the full route, and install a hotter cam and a 4 barrel intake and carb. A 390 up to a 500 cfm carb would help keep the torque the 300 is famous for, but still give you more top end. J C Whitney has the intake and 390 cfm carb.
