I have a dual tank '88 F-150. I'm guessing both fuel gauge sending units are bad since one bounces all over the place and the other shows empty even with a full tank.
So, the rear tank with the unit that shows empty seems to be the only one working. When I switch to the front tank which shows full, the truck dies.
The front tank is full so it's definitely got the gas.
Is there a single fuel pump for the two tanks? Is there a single fuel filter for the two tanks?
With how *****ty the gas mileage of this truck is, I need both tanks working properly to get anything done. The front tank just recently stopped working so any help or pushes in the right direction for troubleshooting will be greatly appreciated.
Your truck should have 3 fuel pumps and 1 fuel filter.
There is a low pressure fuel pump in each tank and a high pressure pump mounted on the frame back by the front tank. The fuel filter should be near the high pressure pump on the forward side of it.

Reason: replaced the word "pump" with "filter" in first sentence.
That would make sense, but first check all the wires going to the pump in that tank for problems (broken, frayed, etc.) and replace the relay (they are like $5). This way you have tried all the cheap and easy stuff before you go through the hassle of dropping the tank and buying a new pump. The pump in my rear tank on my '94 is bad and it's waiting til spring. Good luck, hopefully its just a broken wire or bad relay.
