driveline shutter...

My Dad has a 08 PSD. its a crewcab dually.. he has a 40 ft gooseneck that we pull with it to haul our toys.. anyways when we have it loaded with our toys, pulling away from a stop it has a shudder in the driveline some where.. it only dose it when the trailer has a load on it. I was thinking it had something to do with the two piece rear D-shaft, like the rubber in the hanger bearing flexing a bit on take-off. but i'm not sure.. any ideas what it could be? And NO we have not taken it to the dealer yet...

Take it to a reputable driveline shop and have them fab you a one piece shaft. That's what I am doing today.

it has to do with the driveline angle. putting a load on it has changed the angle just a little.

Does the rear set down a little? If so you could try some air bags or overload springs to help out.

That sounds good, are you going to use the original front yoke assembly?
& will there be enough travel or play back & forth when loaded & the rear end has squatted down? I tow a 35' 5th, pin weight about 2500lbs, & have the same issues on take off. I'm interested to hear how this works out for you.

Chris

yes the rear settles down so the overloads are touching the brackets on the frame....

might have quite a bit of wt from the king pin. You might consider some air bags.

i was telling my dad the other day we should put some bags in it just to keep it level when its loaded down. it looks like a lowrider compaired to the SRW pickups, and its even worse with the load on the back. i guess the 4x4 duallys sit a couple inches lower than the SRW truck to start with.. so it looks like a two wheel drive when its laoded down. i guess bags would be the way to go if it would fix the shutter.

I dropped it off at my work's mechanic and told him to have it done. It's a work truck so I don't care what it costs or what they have to do, just fix it. I will let you know though.

Like was mentioned above this is most likely a driveline angle problem, and it has been talked about on here many times.

When you place a large load on the back it sinks down and changes the driveline angle a bit, which can introduce vibrations.

You can have the dealer reduce the number of shims under the carrier bearing to try to get rid of the vibrations when loaded. However, this can sometimes cause vibrations when the load is removed from the truck and the rear end raises back up. If you only use the truck to haul stuff this may not matter to you.

If you don't always haul with the truck, and the vibrations do show up when unloaded then you will want to put the shims back in. You can then look into adding airbags, Timbrens, or something else to keep the rear end from sagging as much when you load it up.

Or you can just add the airbags/Timbrens to begin with and not mess with the extra work.

The driveline is a two piece affair to reduce and or eliminate driveline flex, which increases as driveline length increases. Driveline flex is dangerous because if it is bad enough the driveline will break in half. I STRONGLY recommend adding air bags or auxilliary springs to fix this problem. Dan.

Anyone seen this with an unloaded truck? I am getting some slight vibration around 45-55 mph. It feels like small bumps in the road and seems to go away once I get into 5th gear with the torque convertor locked up. I have a May '07 built truck with the 6.4. Only 150 miles on it though so maybe just needs break in?
