Just pulled my 360 out of my '71 F-250 4x4 and was wondering how to tell if the rkr assembly needs rebuilt? What parts tend to wear the most? I'm Rebuilding the motor (block is headed to the machine shop thursday) and already have a set of reman heads just don't want any problems, especially with this intresting looking setup that I dont know much about I'm fairly new to the FE family and didn't want to miss somethin?
The rocker will usually gal the shaft if the oiling get to be poor over time. Most shops will remove and clean the rockers and reinstall. Never worrying about the shaft internally, big mistake. Pop the plugs and scrub them, intsall new plugs..No matter what!! Provided, the rockers and shaft check out ok for wear.
Give it all to the machinist, and set back...??? "Provided they do FE's" Look around the shop, none other in sight ? Hmmmmmmmmmmmm
I'm pretty sure he knows FE's there's a couple there he seems to know his stuff. My brothers engine is up there getting some minor mods (460 internally & externally bal, .030 over line bored and honed, 429 non egr heads ported polished bronze valve guides C-Jet valves, port matched manifolds, comp alloy roller fulcrum roller tipped rockers, 7/16 rocker studs, extreme 4x4 cam percision matched to the springs rockers and valves advanced to 429 cam cam timing, torque plated block, decked block and heads, ARP Bolts, 460 horshoe rods 10.5:1 pistons, Edelbrock performer RPM intake, high vol oil pump) just the norm. but anyway back to the little FE isn't there a bushing in the rocker that can be replaced and those springs and washers is there a way to check if those are set correctly?
NO bushing, cast piece strapped to a hardened shaft.. simple simon. Spring installed height is a big issue on the FE.. if he's good with FE's then not to worry. The search will yield plenty of reading on the heads..Heres a taste of decent reading https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...t-heights.html
Staging Lane in Eckert, Co. Pretty intresting shop he does all of the diesel engines from the implement shops (tractors, backhoes, swathers, etc.) around here! I was refering to the springs on the rocker assembly that space the rockers the valve springs are alredy installed on the heads which have been remaned already (bought those from some guy on ebay prolly a mistake but I won't know till they arrive? price was right!!) Seems if they pivot smooth and still have a good mating surface between the rocker and shaft I'm good? No clearnce specs between the shaft and rocker?
Machine shops are few and far between over here in Gods country but good fishing is abundent!!! That would be great if you could find those specs!!! Thanks
