The truck will never be a trailer queen/king. I plan to drive it on club cruises and to local car shows. I will add power brakes and power steering but keep the solid axle. I may even add A/C some time later.

Who has experience with a Ford engine that is different than the 239 cu. in. 1954 Y-block? I want to avoid changing the crossmember if possible. Ideally, I would like a simple bolt it swap but realize the original motor mounts are probably gone. I'm sure the Chevy doesn't mount the same as Ford. I have the original 4 speed tranny with the parking brake attached to the yoke and the handle sticks up through the floor. Kinda cool. I'd like to attach the Ford engine to it.

Thanks for any info
Ron

I would change it to any Y-block (256/272/292/312) and use the T-98 4 speed box.

That is probably the best set up.

(I also have a brand new clutch, pressure plate,throw-out & pilot bearings, resurfaced flywheel, and an excellent condition truck bellhousing ready to go if you want it!!! ..... I also have an excellent T-98 without a home too........ I'm going to a more modern automatic so I'm not using the manual stuff)

Cheers,

Rick

Just curious since I am not familiar with it: is the T98 a truck or pass car box? If a truck box is it syncromesh? Are the gear ratios good for hiway use or are they designed for low end pulling power?

AXracer,

I have posted some pix of my truck. I have also called Mid-50s. They do not have a Toyota steering box or pump. She suggested that if I could find a 4-bolt box with pump and hoses, she could furnish everything else.

The T-98 is a pretty good truck box. Very similar to the T-18/19 I think. Has a VERY low (non-sync) 1st gear and fairly normal (and sync'ed) 2nd, 3rd, direct drive 4th. Also has a parking brake on the back. Used in the F-600 and down. Probably one the most common 4 speed truck transmissions out there...

Some good info here: Transmissions? T 18, T 19, T 98, SM 465, SM 420 NP 435, NV 4500, T 5

No, they don't supply the box itself. You need a PS box from a 1979-1984 Toyota 4x4 pickup. Depending on your location there are a few different sources for the box. Local wrecking yard, rebuilt from your local large box autoparts supplier such as CarQuest or NAPA (these are still stocked), used from a national wrecking yard search site such as Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market . If you get one used be sure to try and get it with fittings and hoses.AFA the pump, it does not have to be a Toyota pump.Use a stock non rack and pinion pump that was originally used with your engine along with it's mount and pulley(s). Depending on pump used and headers used, you may be able to use a stock Toyota high pressure hose (the low pressure return hose is nothng fancy if you got the Toy return hose fitting with your box, just a length of rubber PS hose and a couple hose cleamps. MF sells a hose set with box fittings if you didn't. GottaShow also sells a trick SS braid hose set with special banjo fittings for the box. They will even make them to whatever length you need.

Aha, a stump puller. That's what I thought. Not real comfortable or economical for cruising unless coupled with a high ratio rear axle in which case 4th would be more like an overdrive. Would be good IMHO for a truck that was going to be used for hauling/work rather than just fun. Thanks.

i got a t-98 behind my flatty , and the truck isn't " economical " anyway , but it is sure a lot better and stronger than the 3 speed that was there . i removed the brake { parking } drum off the back{ half ton , ebrake in rear drums } and all the hardware to it , and had to go to a two peice as it seemed to me a one peice wouldn't work . so i'd leave the t-98 in there , you nor any one else is ever gonna break it without breaking something else in the engine first !!!!!! plus you get the fun of shifting instead of a slush o matic !!!!!!!!
