Differential vents....

I noticed a nipple on the top of my front diff(I have not checked the rear yet) that does not have a tube attached to it. Shuold there be a rubber vent tube attached? Or, is this a one-way valve?

I haven't looked at my front, but I am used to the vent being near the brake line splitter. Yes it should have a vent brings it up near frame height. I don't believe there is a check valve in it because it will need to breath in both directions. I have heard of using some filter from a VW to keep water out of the tube.

The two Range Rovers I owned had a hard but flexible rubber tube from the diff to the body of the truck that terminated in a 180 Degree bend that pointed back down towards the ground. That bend helped prevent water intrusion. A great idea but they had to be checked and cleaned out occasionally as they would clog and pop off the nipple or push gear oil out of any one of the seals when the diff got hot.
I did not see a hose for this on any of the parts diagrams. Has anyone else? And if so maybe a part #?
Thanks,
Scott

Just a piece of rubber hose, probably 1/8" or 3/16" will do nicely. Even if it wasn't there stock, it's not a bad idea to extend it above the axle.

My Excursion has a hose from the front diff that anchors up in the frame. The rear diff vent hose connects to the brake line t-block.

I was thinking that I could make my own. A little ingenuity and some rubber hose!
