ok i bought an 85 stepside with a 300 l6 2wd but i want a v8 and my gramp has an old 360 and a 4** somthing sitting in the shed (both need a rebuild) i also have a 5 speed out of an 89..will it bolt up to either engine? and will the engine go into the 85?
I recommend readin the sticky thread up above where it says 390 into 1985....same applies for your 360. The other engine would need to be figured out since 460's were available in 1985, and 400's were available up til 1982.

The 5 speed out of an '89 what? 300/302/351w share the same bell. The fiver will probably not fit your 360 unless it's an NV4500 or some other trans that does not have an integral bell.
As for putting a worn out 360 in--keep the 300.
If your 300 is sound, adding some performance parts and that 5 speed--if it fits--would be very effective and worlds cheaper than rebuilding the 360 and adapting.
i just like the idea of a v8...its going to be a weekend truck and i have all the time in the world to do it lol...the truck was free (my dad payed $100 for it) and so is the engine so i wont mind putting a little money into it on the side . thanks for all the input guys keep it coming
If you rebuild the 360 into a better engine, that's different. See the FE forum for many threads on this subject.
390 crank & rods, 360 pistons, head work or aftermarket heads including valve springs good for 7000 rpm*, decent cam, headers, good manifold, 600 or 650 cfm carb, good ignition & you will more than double your power with the same gas.
*no, you're not going to spin it 7000, but 5500 and you need a margin.
360 about 215 gross, 180 or so net--can't find a decent source tonight.
Your 360 will serve as the basis for whatever you want from 390 to 445 or so with a different crank/rods/pistons.
A stock 360 isn't worth the effort over the 300 imo. It will just use more gas for the most part....
See the FE forums for 3 or 4 threads about this--there's a couple guys writhing on the ground about their 360s, twitching in agony over the fact they are going to have to pony up real money to make a runner (i.e. 390 or larger) out of their 360s or be stuck with a pooch....
