alternator problems

Hi everybody. I am new at this, and this web site was recommened to me by a gentleman at a ford garage. So I hope this will make some since. I have a 1997 f-350 ford dually with extended cab. Was having some trouble starting in cold weather but found a relay on top of the motor was bad. replaced this and the truck started great for a couple of days. Went to leave work and truck wouldn't start. Have changed the alternator and both batterys and when tested the alternator shows no output. Tested the alternator on the stand and shows good. The truck runs fine off the batterys but just will not charge. What can I do, have alreay spent more money than I have but need the truck. Help please ford nc

First Welcome aboard. Check the plug on the top of the alternator (plastic connector), the spade clips on the end of the wires (inside of the connector) will become loose, they need to be sqeezed together alittle. This is the most common problem. Let us know what you find.

I just went thru changing the alt on my 96. When I got it together it still wasn't charging. Turned out the fusible links on the relay mounted to the passenger fender had fried. The diodes in the old alt must have shorted blowing the links. There are two of these fusible links 12ga and they are wye'd together to a single 10ga wire that goes to the alt. main output post.

And welcome! There is lots of fine help here on this forum

Are you sure about the 10 gauge part? My truck has a 4 gauge wire, but it appears that the wire isn't factory original - the wire must have burned up before I got the truck. 10 gauge seems awful small for 135A. Don't forget that the little wire going to the "A" terminal on the regulator also taps into the junction between the fuseable link and the alternator output wire.

No I'm not sure, just guessing. It's bigger than the both fusible links put together anyway.
