Occasionally receive the sears catalog and see where they have a variety of cabinets, storgage shelves, and benches. Have not seen much of a selection at Lowes, or Home Depot. On my poor man's budget, went to a used office supply store and picked up a double door cabinet; wish I had room for another, and 3 of the long (heavy gage metal) file cabinets, not the cheap 1's. Actually found couple of the file cabinets at second hand store for $30, painted them all 1 flavor and solved my storage problem. Found the heavy duty long file cabinets can store heck of a lot of tools, and or, auto parts. Anyhow, food for thought.
A couple of friends of mine have used 4 post lifts with the two runners covered by steel/wood...they have put welding stations and woodwork stations on them. The idea being that when not in use it is lifted up so the car or truck can go underneath....of course you need to check to make sure you have the height.
Number 1: you know the garage is too small. Can you build a "lean to" off the side for storage? Move air comp outside? Old kitchen cabinets work well for storage. When you find a good solution let us know....Good Luck.
Great Topic! I look forward to 4 or 5 more pages on suggestions in the coming weeks. I know my garage needs the help. One thing I have recently done was to buy a couple of the 4 shelf wire racks that Target sometimes runs on sale. I get black but they come in white, chrome, etc. I've seen them other places as well but price is pretty good at Target. I'll get a set of casters from Home Depot with the threaded post and screw them on in place of the feet. I've also gotten some of the see-thru plastic tubs - different sizes, shoebox & larger and then label them and place them on the new mobile shelving cart. I can roll it around the garage out of my way and I can keep a good bit of stuff on it where I can easily identify. A label maker helps where I have multiple things in a box. Soem of the bigger tubs I just got a furniture dolly and stacked them on that. I can easily roll around out of my way. It's been helpful to me but I'm always looking for tips to get more out of my space. Good thread.
I've been cramming stuff into my garage for almost 2 years now since I built my house. I'm finally now at a point where I need to figure out what can be stored away and what can't. I'm definitely getting some overhead storage. I find that half the crap I have in my garage I don't need within reach so putting it in some overhead storage (above the garage door) is ideal. I have 12' ceilings in my garage and there's about a 3 1/2' gap between the garage being raised and the ceiling itself so it's going in that portion of the garage (door open, can't see it, door closed, accessible). I also have a lift to raise my camper shell (or topper, whatever you want to call it) to the ceiling in another part of the garage.
Right on Silver Bullet. My dad's got a garage where he put a thick (1") plywood shelf or mezzanine suspended above the door. He has eye bolts through the ply and lag eye screws (big, pre drill the hole type) into the rafters. Thick wire suspends it. Of course on the house side you can nail a ledge 2x4. He doesn't put anything too heavy on it since he's pretty close to the San Andreas Fault though.
I picked some warehouse rack wire shelf things out of the trash and hung them from the rafters. I keep my seasonal stuff up there out of the way. (Coolers, tackle boxes, etc.)
I have some metal cabinets, but am getting rid of them and going to hanging wall cabinets. I'm trying to maximise floor space. That way theree's room to move around the cars, and open doors. My garage is two cars wide, but pretty deep, and has a storage loft. I put all the lesser used stuff I can up there.
With a ;arge work bench, parts cleaner, sand blaster, teo rollaway chests, jacks, ;awn mower, bikes, kids toys, etc... it's a never-ending battle.
I saw this in a magazine holds 250lbs costs $180 you crank it by hand or with a drill. Have not looked on the internet to see if you could find it cheaper. I may try to build one (or two).
