2 Low?

This kid I go to school with says he drives his truck around in 4 low all the time. Just without the hubs locked in. He claims that while driving around town, it gives him better "off the line acceleration".

Well yeah, it would do that because you have a whole lot more torque... Problem is that you have a very low top speed. If you wanted to get on the freeway (or drive in a 45-zone, for that matter,) you have to come to a complete stop to shift, otherwise your engine will explode. It's too annoying to be worth it. (With an auto) you really have to mash on the brakes to keep the truck stopped, and it lurches whenever you shift... Mechanically I don't think there is anything wrong with it, but it does make for an extremely stressful ride, always worrying about your truck lurching forward and mowing down a shopping mall or something...

plus, it is a very easy way to drop your driveshaft in the middle of the road when you mash on it at a traffic light.
if i tried doing that with my 88, it would spit the driveshaft out in less than 2 seconds.

and i know it will happen, cause i already have done it twice using the truck with the snow plow attached as a bulldozer to grade driveways.

4L is for LOW speed maneuvers, NOT quick takeoffs. Me thinks this "kid" you go to school with may have more money than brains. He's gonna be spending a lot of it repairing his truck if he keeps this up.
