well just bought a 88 for 200$, honestly i am not planning to keep just fix and sell for profit. transmission is stuck in 3rd, and wont rock out or even think about comming out. should i just buy a new tranny? if so what is compatible, i know the ranger tranny's will work but i cant figure out which transmission will bolt on. its a 5speed 2wd bolted to a 2.9
thanks guys!
Unbolt the boot, and take off the shifter assembly. See if you can manually put it into neutral with a screw driver. I bet it is the shifter itself that is binding up.
The shifter could be binding, or the shifter has 'fallen apart' and is stuck inside the housing and not actually moving any of the shift fork rods or there could be internal damage to the transmission. Another possibility is that the clutch could be hosed or require a bleed of the hydraulic system. I would start by investigating the 'easy stuff' first before pulling a transmission that may not require rebuild or replacement.
ok pulled stick out ( forgive the lack of technical terms, this is the FIRST time i've ever worked on ANY transmission ) and tried to shift with a screw driver, no dice... drove it home in 3rd and the clutch appeared to function normally. gonna dig a little deeper tommrow and take as much apart from the 'cab' as you can... any advice would be ausome and please tell me any big NO NO's now.
ok pulled out the 4 bolts that i thought would loosen somthing up.... turns out (doh!!!) it is just one large cast, here's some pictures i have no idea what to do next. gonna see about taking apart what ever i can.... please help me out here guys
fyi: realy sorry about picture size cant figure out how to shrink em!

Can't see the pictures, but I would suggest draining the transmission and pulling the pan off and visually checking the internals. If you see something that doesn't 'look right', then I would consider removing the transmission and going from there. Not sure what transmission you have - what is the trans. code on the door placard (if it's still there)? Is it 2- or 4-wheel drive? You might find more info here or here.
it is 2wd and i THOUGHT that assembly would pop off... slammed it pretty hard with a hammer wont even think about budging..... motor has either 100k or 200k miles.... i'm not very expirenced with cars but odometer says 90,xxx and the PO said he diddent know if it had rolled over or not... took off the obivous 4 bolts should i take off the other 2 visible ones? gonna get some good stands and get it up a little higher... then work on drainin and pulling the lower pan...
the bottom line is am i gonna probably need a new transmission????? wanna keep cost as low as possible but dont wanna give someone a lemon....
ice is starting to melt hoping to get back out there soon....
thats my thinking exactly Lead head... gonna crawl under there and see if somthing else is holding it on....
while i'm at it
what would be a good price to ask for this old bronco... has a little body cancer and damage to the right door and fender.... right door dosent open from the outside... motor runs great.... transmission is GOING to be fixed.... all that comes to mind at the moment...
