Do any of you F250 truck owners use chains when driving in ice & snow?
If so, which type seems to work the best - i.e. easy to install and works well?
I have the 265/75-16 tires on the truck.
I used to use just standard twisted chains on my 1/2 ton gas burner years ago.
I just picked up a pair of standard duty twisted link chains for my truck. It had cams that you turn to help tighten the chain. I was skeptical at first but it ended up working well to get them nice and tight.
I have a set of severe duty chains that have only used them once on my current pickup, in the mud. Worked good, but I dont think you would want severe duty chains on pavement. The lugs on mine are quite large. I really dont like going places where I have to chain up. LOL
I have 285/75/16's on my F250. I use chains when I am in Colorado hunting during snow conditions. I have used chains yearly now for about 20 years. You can get by with standard duty chains for the hard pack conditions on roads and some off raod conditions. Make sure to have about 700-1000lbs of sand bags (i use oak trees) for weight in the back of the truck to help keep traction on the rear wheels. I have found the with teh PSD the weigt of the front end suffices more than enough when only using one set of chains. I always put them on teh front with teh 4wd engaged to help with steering and of course traction. When I am in teh back woods hunting in 2ft fresh snow on uncut roads I have 2 sets od extreme duty chains with X links every 4 links. When you get stuck with all 4 chained and weight in the back and low 4 you be stuck! But I have only been there once.
