'96 302ci Idling Problems
Starting a few months ago, I would go to start the truck, it would idle for a second or so, and then stall out. I only have one mode of transportation, so I would just crank it up, keep on the gas, and drive with two feet until the problem cleared up. I already tried letting the fuel pump prime the lines before starting, but it didn't clear up. The problem is RANDOM and the amount of time before the problem clears up is RANDOM. I usually drive two-footed until I come to a stop and test it and it is idling fine.
Right now, I've done a temporary fix by cranking on the throttle linkage stop screw to increase tension on the cable. This works fine for the moment but I would like to fix the problem.
The only thing we could figure that we have done recently that would lead to this condition is that we changed the clutch plate, master, and slave cylinders. I don't think this lead to the problems, though. Also, the line from the air pump has a major leak where it goes into the exhaust, but as far as I know, this only pumps air into the exhaust. I've been trying to get around to plugging the resulting exhaust gas leak, but it's difficult to get at the area.
Anybody have any ideas about what could be causing the problem? I am going to go get the codes pulled once I get the radiator filled again (it only had water in it and it was freezing last night, so I drained it and the block before I went to sleep), but my main suspects are all things electrical, because of the random nature of the occurrences.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. It's a good truck and hasn't even got 100k miles on it yet, although it's getting there.
Thanks,
Mark
You may have created a problem by cranking on the throttle stop screw, the computer wants to see a voltage below 1.0v when the throttle is closed. If this improved your situation them maybe it's a sign you have a bad TPS, but don't jump to conclusions yet. By far the biggest source of idle problems on these motors is a dirty idle bypass valve.
