Help Me help a freind
One of my long time friends, is applying for a job as a travel intern through STA travel. The trip would bring him around the world to visit some pretty amazing places. He is looking to get as many people to watch his application video as possible, so please check out what he wrote me, or just skip directly to the YouTube link below and make a nice comment. Youtube visits and comments are a large part of the decision.
Thanks,
Jake
One of my most lucid and defining memories from the three years I spent living in Guatemala took place on an ordinary day in the small, rural, indigenous village where I lived. As I headed home from work, I noticed a local man walking down the street--dirty, tired, and worn after a tough day's work in the fields. He was proudly dressed in the typical clothing from our village, completely hand-woven by his wife and replete with designs passed down through the generations. It was clear that he lived a life defined by respect for custom and tradition. And then, an odd thing happened: I heard a distinctively American rap song coming from the direction of the man's shirt. The situation grew even more perplexing as he pulled out a brand new RAZR flip-phone from his pocket, unfolded it--at which time the rap song (Jay-Z's 99 Problems) stopped playing--and answered it in a Mayan language. It was clear to me at that point: although I had no idea what was actually happening in the village, the hilarious, fun, often confusing things we experience when take ourselves out of our comfort zone are worth sharing.
And that is my plan for this summer. If I am selected to be an STA World Traveler Intern for 2009, I will continue to share my experiences with everyone through my photography, blog posts, and short videos. You can help me achieve this goal by watching my application video on YouTube, and posting a comment / rating it / marking it as a favorite. The videos are judged by the amount of support we can generate through the magic of the internet, so every little bit counts!
