Just bought a new F150 so now the 64' is my project truck. Have been considering for quite some time now swapping in a 351w mainly due to the availability of performance parts and the fact that LMC sells a conversion kit for mounting a 351w into my particular truck. though I'm pretty sure my trannie would not work with a 351w so that is why I am here. Now that I have the new truck i can take more time to save money with the 64' being non opperable and not worried about getting it back together before work... I want a moderate performance engine. something that sounds great, performs well partically off-road as i plan on lifting the truck and manly using it as an off road toy. However I am not trying to kill the bank and build anything rediculous, just something reasonable but fun. Looking to lift it enough to put 38's on it. Now what engine/trannie(manual)/transfer case... do you all reccomend for my application and why?? Thanks guys

My '64 has a 429/NP435/NP205 combo. At the final stages of build, so I haven't had any miles on the combo yet. It should be bulletproof.
I am located in the CA bay area. I have a spare 390, a spare C6 (though it has the 429/460 bolt pattern), and several spare 390 parts, bellhousings, etc., if you're interested.
The choice is yours ultimately. I stuffed a 460 in my turd and wonder when I will be forced to store it again. If you go with a 351W you'll have tons of aftermarket support and you also can make it past a few gas stations between fills. A 390 is a good motor but again the best milage I have seen so far is 13 mpg. The universal bar LMC sells is pretty much the same universal all other companies sell. Personally stick with a set of mount brackets verse the tube. It's a much better look. Trans Dapt Performance Products - Engine Swap Motor Mount Kits is where most places get theirs from.
I would try and find a donor truck for the engine and trans. The transfer case should be divorced. If you want to save a little money stick with your stock T-case for now. It probably is a Dana 24. If at a later time you want to upgrade, an NP205 will bolt in and you won't have to modify any drive shafts besides the one to fit your new trans which you have to do anyway.
I have bought a number of trucks for a few hundred dollars just for the engine and transmission.
