This might help - / 1964_08.gif. I would go out and look at my truck but it's just too cold. I know if you're facing the truck from the front the positive battery cable hooks to the right (drivers side) and the starter wire hooks to the left (passenger side). At least that's how mine is set up.

One terminal is marked S (the wire from the ignition switch goes to this one to activate the starter)

One is marked I or B (all others go on that one)

If they aren't marked, put the truck in neutral and run a jumper wire from the + bat to each terminal. The one that makes the starter turn is the S terminal.

If you lost the starter wire in the bunch, its much easier to find with a volt meter, its usually rubber capped but when the trucks are this old, who knows.

has the engine been started ? use a breaker bar on the crankshaft and see if the engine will turn over by hand. if it doesn't you have more serious problems. the thumping youre refering to sounds like the starter is engaging but not turning the engine. could be a coupla other things also. Dutch

We can better help if we had some more to go on. What engine and tranny are we working with. Does it turn now by hand. You may have something bound up. I've seen many like this from the torque converter not fully seated.

The engine is a 73-79, 250 inline six, with a three speed trans, not sure which one yet.
