Hi Everyone,
I was talking with a friend last night that I had not seen for a while and he told me about an old flathead Ford V8 that he found while looking for a power unit for a well service rig. He said it was probably pre '48 and it had the distributor down on the front of the engine. He said it had been used about two months ago temporarily as a power unit. It is mounted on what is left of a bobbed off frame. It has a good radiator and is linked up to a floor shift tranny. Don't know if it's three speed or four speed.
The point is it runs and the radiator and tranny come with. He says it can be had cheap supposedly. That of course remains to be seen when the dealing starts.
I don't want or need it but I am considering buying it if the price is right to re-sell or use for trading stock. I need body parts for my '53s. I also do transporting of custom and classic cars so it is possible I could deliver this to someone who would want it for a reasonable price if it was along one of my runs.
If anyone is interested let me know by PM or e-mail.
There are lots of flatties used as irrigation pumps and for sawmills, etc. They are maintained much better (usually) than the average farm truck, and are a good score. This one being a 59-series engine makes it a little less desireable, but not much. Snap it up, Dave!

I probably will if the price is right. One persons idea of cheap may well be different than mine. I think this was originally a vehicle from what they said about in being on a bobbed vehicle frame.
Like I said, I would get it to sell or trade for stuff I need as I am not personally into the flat heads. I was just more or less fishing around here to see if there was any market for it.
There is definitely a market but it is a little tough selling one of unknown condition. Too many cracked blocks out there.
A good block is good property but a cracked one not worth much.
I'm looking for a good 3 spd trans but will probably try to come up with something closer.
If it is cheap jump on it but don't put any more into it than what the external parts are worth.

Like I said, I have yet to see it. Being as they have recently used it as a power unit, I am somewhat confident that it is probably OK. I assume that since it is with radiator and having been used as a power unit they have kept antifreeze in it. What I don't know is if craks in these blocks develop from anything other than freezing. Hopefully someone here knows about that. I do think it will be easy to look at since it is not surrounded by a body. From what I understand sbout the people who have it, I think I can work out a pending deal.
I am no expert on the subject but I do know that cracks in the area of the valve seats that often run into the cylinders is common as well as cracks in the lower area of the block where the pan bolts on.
Almost all flatheads have cracks around some of the head bolt holes in the block but they are pretty much considered standard equipment and cause no problems.

Hmmm, that's interesting. I had one years ago and I knew about cracks around the valve seats but evennthe one I had which had a zillion miles on it didn't crack to the cylinders.
ya know what'll happen dave ? i scored two perfect flawless blocks , fresh from being checked and a locked up 37 21 stud . well every one and his brother was looking for one .... i got 'em and asked 150 each for the good ones , and didnt really put a price on the 37 , ended up giving it away . i didn't think i was outta line on price . but they sat here for more thana year and finally sold them . put up a lil' snippet here and a couple other places bout a flatty outta a 49 ford bizness coupe a kid had locally . he wanted 300 for it the 3speed o/d tranny replete with wiring and solenoids , radiator , everything associated to it . no one seemed to want it and those that did were to far away . so if you buy it be prepared ya might have to sit on it a bit .my buddy norm bought the 300 dollar one , and it ran .......

Yeah, there is a lot going against it. That is why it would have to be the deal of a century. I'm thinkin' scrap price, I can hardly loose on that deal.
