Just bought a 75 or 76 ford truck it has a 351w and a c6 auto. I think it is a c6 but not sure. I payed 250 for the truck the frame is badly rusted so the truck is no good. The motor runs great just needs cleaned up. I will find out what the tranny is ( I still think it is a c6, but we will see) any how it shifts good. What will I need to swap it in my truck. It is a 66 f-100 and I know this year did not have the 351 w in them. The truck has a strait six so thats why I need info. Oh the truck also has a 9 inch which is a plus. Thanks for your help.
Kris, You have everything you need on the 75 to do the swap into your 66. I'm doing the same swap to mine right now. You can also use the disc brakes and the power steering. There's probably been hundreds of threads on this topic in one form or another, my best advice is to do a search of the archives.
Hey Kris, Welcome to FTE! i am in the middle of doing a 289 c4 swap myself, there is good info using the search, if you have the parts truck with the 351, auto... you will have everything you need.
Kris - If the transmission bellhousing is one piece, and cast as part of the entire transmission, then you have a C-6. If the bellhousing is a separate bolted on component, then it is a C-4. I agree with John W - I think you have a 351M more than a 351W, if it is original to the truck. You can use the location and position of the thermostat to tell the difference: In the block and parallel to the ground: 335 series, the 351M/400 (also 351C, but those are VERY rare, and out of your date range anyway.) In the intake and perpendicular to the ground: Windsor series (also FE series, but those were discontinued in '76.) Also, in the intake and parallel to the ground: 385 series, the 429 and 460.
If the OP's truck truely has a 351W engine, who knows what the A/T trans is?
Since the 351W was not available till 1981 in F150/350's, the engine has been swapped, and if it came from a passenger car, the trans could be an FMX (14 trans pan bolt holes).
Qwik way to ID the engine: 351M/400 = 8 valve cover bolts / 351W = 6 valve cover bolts.
