Applying Break Issues

my vehicle is a 1997 Expedition.

I was wondering if someone has some advice on where to start my troubleshooting.
here is what's going on:
1. my break lights do not brighten when break is applied
2. my cruise control doesn't shut off when break is applied
3. it's difficult to put vehicle into gear (when in park).

thanks for all your help.

Have you checked the fuses? Is there power going to the brake light switch
under the dash? Does the switch work? A VOM/Multimeter is a wonderful
tool, but one of those circuit testers with the clear, plastic handle with a light
in it will often suffice. $20 at Sears, can prolly find 'em cheaper at places like
Harbor Freight, maybe an auto parts store.

I failed to mention that the blinkers work fine. That is how i found out that break lights weren't brightening up.

I understand Haynes manuals have halfway-decent wiring diagrams....

Good advice. Look up near where the brake pedal is mounted and you should see a small electrical switch with a plunger on it pressing against the brake pedal. Pull the wiring plug off the switch and using a voltmeter or test light see if there is 12V at either of the terminals on the wire plug.
Next you need to have a multi-meter that can read resistance. On the resistance setting (ohms) press a probe on to each of the two terminals on the switch and press the pedal. If the meter shows a reading then switch is good, if not then switch is bad. I would bet the switch needs replaced.
Good luck.

or just jump the connector with a paper clip or something and see if they light up
