4x4 Question(s)

so it's getting a lot of snow up here. i've got a few questions that i've had for some time regarding using 4x4. might sound stupid, but this is the first one i've owned and ever used to any real extent. so i headed out into the snow again today and remembered another storm we had recently. i know that you're not supposed to run the 4x4 on dry pavement, but at what point does it get too dry? there was some slush still on the asphalt and it was slippery, but i did run that day in 2 wheel. then today, i was running 4x4 and i've noticed in the parking lot here at school in the parking lot i can feel the front tires gripping. it's snowy as hell, but it is fairly hard packed.

so the question is at what point do i need to call it quits on utilizing the 4 wheel drive? i'm used to flat out ice or mud, not lots and lots of snow.

Good question, that I think everyone has at one point. The way I gauge it is just what makes me feel more comfortable. A lot of times I'll pull to the shoulder, come to a complete stop and then try to pull away in 2 wheel drive. If I get spin from the back tires I'll put it in 4 wheel drive. If I drive out of whatever I parked in without a hiccup I'll drive that way for a while and then try again a little later. Or, sometimes when it's not icy, I'll give it a little throttle and see if I start spinning a little (could be dangerous), and if I get a little slippage into 4 wheel drive it goes. I've gone off the road several times, once at speed and through a fence and some trees, so I'm a little more cautious than I used to be. I don't drive in rain or dry roadways with 4 wheel drive going, but I'm not afraid to put it in 4 wheel drive in mud, slush (if it's slick underneath), snow, ice, etc.

I hope that helps.
