i have straight pipe on my 79 ford with a 400 in it it goes all the way to the back and exits behind the rear tires and i have been easy on it in town and cops keep on pulling me over for loud exhaust..........can they do this? tahnks kevin
The details depend on your local/state laws. Where you are will make only a small difference though. Pretty much everybody has noise ordinances anymore. So yes they can do this. But the question you might wanna ask is why they're looking at you. Cops are people too. Did you do something they might have disapproved of? Speeding? Burnouts? A little saturday night mayhem? I'm not judging, but anything like this will encourage them to ticket you for something that would otherwise not be a problem. Especially if they can't/haven't busted you for whatever. Try laying low for a while. Outta sight outta mind. They might just forget about you.
Another thought, were you ordered to get a muffler? I always wanted to get a glass pack and pull the inner tube and fiberglass out, then slide it OVER the pipe and weld it on. It'd probably pass a visual inspection. But the sound obviously ain't going to change. If the local law figures it out you'd probably become real popular. And still have to buy a muffler.
Regardless, you'd probably be pretty smart to go ahead and get your truck as quiet as possible. Hard to get a noise/muffler ticket that way. Just remember there's still plenty of other things if they want to give you a ticket.
