Diff Noise - Fix or not fix

I have 2003 with 3.73 9" diff. Over the period I have had it replaced three times. 2 were done early on. The last one was at 40k miles. I have 70k. The ESP warranty is getting ready to run out this week. I am torn whether to get it done again. The last time it was done has been the best out of three as far as being quiet but I still have pitch noise between 48mph and 55mph on the throttle. It is not tire noise. I would like no noise at all but torn on whether to get it done again as it might come out louder and then I only have 12mo to get it done again under warranty. Should these diffs have any noise at all? I told those guys that they must not be setting it up properly or need to tighten up the backlash just a hair. It is always quiet after they do it but a couple of week it always come back. The last time I was there I had them add friction modifiers and it is quiet for a period of time but comes back. It is nice when there is no noise because you get use to it over time. What do you guys think?

I assume that you have the 5.4L engine which means you have the 9.75" Sterling rearend.

My 01 that I had never made a bit of noise.

Yes, I have 5.4L. They use to ship the entire diff and just bolt on. That method probably would have fixed it but unless I get an mechanic that has done a lot of diffs I will probably have the same problem. Thanks for the reply.

I suggest you find a better mechanic or better made gears. I just installed 4.56s in my truck and it was the first axle I have ever done. It make no whining noises.

Im curious though.. how do you drive your truck after the new gears were installed? You are supposed to drive around 500 miles before any hard acceleration or towing.

I don't believe I ever done jack rabbit starts in the truck. No thrills. I may have tow after my last one. I will take it easy to see if it makes a difference this time.
