You could take a 96 bed and put it on a 73 if you wanted. Bolt holes are all the same.

The framerail spacing is different between 4X4's and 2X4's in the dentside years so you will have to drill and make spacers if mixing the two.

so no drilling required even though the bed is off a half ton and the truck is 3/4 ton

the only differences in the beds are the 73 to 77 F250 4x4 high boys the frame rails are narrower.but all the 2wd trucks are the same so your safe.

the only difference will be one has a fuel door, the other has a cap. it's something nitpicky that is different.

Not true at all, I've put a 2wd bed on my 78 F-150 4x4.

Note he said difference between 4x4 and 2x4, not 2wd.

The guy that has it absoluetly right is Northeaster79.
See the 2wd beds are the same regardless of year. The only different frame widths were from the 73-77 F250 trucks. These had a narrow frame behind the cab, so these are the only interchange is between other F250's from 73 to 77.
Later trucks 78 / 9 4x4's and 4x2's will interchange. You can even take the 1/2 ton beds from early years and interchange with the 4x4 of the later ones, these will interchange. The exception here is the fuel fillers. Doors and caps can and will be different depending on location, and early trucks may not even offer a dual tank option. (highboy1975 mentioned this)
I think everyone was correct to some degree, it just has to be explained in a little more detail.
These bed swaps are common, and really a piece of cake.
The op's beds will interchange without mounting modification.

75f350 nailed it. we're all pretty much right. 75f350s answer was the best and most complete though.

Just remember you will need the fuel filler neck, hose and fuel door hardware from the 1978 as well to make it all work.

But that is all bolt on simple as well.

You should not have problems.
