does a restrictive muffler decrease mpg and power?
my dad got me a cheap muffler that weighed about 20-30lbs, 30 something inches long. most of the weight was from the insulation inside it. it is aslo real quiet. will putting a free-flowing muffler increase my mpg? i was thinking of a summit turbo muffler, dynomax supper turbo, or dynomax thrush turbo. anyone have an opinion on them, im to cheap to get a flowmaster

To get just a flowmaster muffler is like 60 bucks, which isn't to bad. I'm not sure what the others are. Yes, a high flow muffler will give you slightly more power and slightly better gas mileage because of the power increase.

A smaller muffler will help to raise the engines horse power, by a hair. The smaller muffler helps the exoust gas exit the piston chamber by creating a kind of pulling action, like a vacume. Not to mention the 30 less pounds!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 25-Sep-02 AT 01:52 AM (EST)]not to be picky...but its not the size of the muffler, it is the flowing characteristics of the muffler that determine it's scavenging affect....a turbo muffler is a good flowing muffler that is quiet and around 20-30 bucks. Glasspacks flow good, but are louder. they run about 15-20 bucks and are very strong.

Glass packs have been shown to not have the scavenging effects of a good turbo muffler though. Don't recomend glass packs for anything but noise.
