GET THE TOOL! I never and I broke the clips. Well after talking to the dealership for hours, cause the clips are not on every computer. I drove across the city to the only dealership that had them Well 2 plastic clips at $42.00 left me scratching my head. It is easy to do just gassie.
Take a look at the top of the page under Articles/Specs...Fuel/Oil/Air Systems. There is a good step by step with pictures, how to relieve pressure, etc.
Make sure you get the right filter and use the disconnect tool. My 5.4 FFV has 3/8-in ends not 5/16. Have a rag handy and watch your eyes or wear safety glasses. Easy to do, just don't force anything.
Everyone is entitled to treat their own truck however they please.
Myself I would not start mine, and then bang the fuel pump shut off though.
if you keep tripping and resetting the emergency shutoff it could maybe fail, but the real harm I see is running the injectors dry, especially doing it over and over on purpose.
I have fixed vehicles for people that ran their car/truck out of gas and done damage.
Maybe I am just too cautious....Heck maybe I could do it to my truck 50 times and not harm it.
But I prefer to not take that chance, call me OCD or whatever it is, I will not subject my truck to that needlessly though.
If I wanted a **** poor job done, I would just take it to a shop and entrust it to someone I do not know, and know nothing of their skills, and let them work on it.
When I went to change my filter I tried the blue and gray disconnects and they would not work. Had to just use the scissor tool itself and the line popped right off.

I do not use the special tool myself, they are very easy to indo.
But maybe oneday i will buy a set, just because I like tools, and toys.
i always unplug the fuel pump cut-off switch, and then start the engine until it runs out of fuel..... that will help to relieve most of the psi.... then just do the change. for the tool, years ago i bought a pair of disconnect tools which has like 4 sizes. works great !
