Hi All - I have a 2000 F250 - 7.3 liter Power Stroke Turbo Diesel and I have had it since it was new. Last summer, I paid it off and have had one issue after another. New transmission, 2 new batteries, and an alternator. The year before, I had to have the front end redone (bearings, etc.).
Now, the Battery voltage gauge is acting up. It was random the past couple weeks, but now the needle is full position to outside the normal operating range (18) and my headlights are fluctuating. I've done some research and looks like it could be the voltage regulator?? My manual just says to have the electrical system checked as soon as possible.
I do have a hypertech programmer and hooked it up a couple weeks ago and no errors came up.
Yes, it sounds like the regulator is gone. You can verify that with a DVM and check the voltage at the battery when running. The reason the manual says to have it checked is because overcharging will ruin your new batteries in a very short time.
I would suggest looking at battery connections first to make sure they are squeaky clean and make sure your serp belt is in good order. Nothing but time investment to check those two things out. I would also have the alternator checked again, you might have gotten a bad rebuild or something like that.
