Ranger's engine stumbles

Hello. New to Ford Enthusiasts. I have a 2004 Ranger 4.0 V6. The engine stumbles at idle and while driving until it warms up. Then it seems to go away when it reaches higher temps. Every once in awhile it stumbles and dies at start up. Any info would be greatfull. Thankyou.

Could be the fast idle solenoid , but I'd have someone pull the codes for you and see what the computer has to say.

Rangermatt-How many miles on this Ranger?? Are you seeing a CEL(check engine light)-if so, can you get the codes out of the 'puter with a scan tool?? If no codes, clean MAF with spray made for MAF(DO NOT TOUCH OR PUT ANYTHING ON ELEMENT IN MAF SENSOR EXCEPT SPRAY CLEANER), could be possible o2 sensor on the way out, just not bad enough yet to set code..Also, when was last time fuel filter was changed??

My Ranger has 50,100 miles. there are no check engine lights on. I cleaned the MAF sensor and that didn't change anything. Is it possible to check the O2 sensor? If so where is it located? I changed the fuel filter a month ago. Thanks drb1956 and dadlovesfords for your guys' help.

Yeah with a scan tool you can see what the "return voltage" is..if the voltage is over 1.1, the sensor is no good(as it "lowers" its standards as it ages) then it would set a code.. There is a theory out there that says o2 sensors "are" a maintenance item and should be replaced every 75,000 to 100,000 miles (I would not replace these with this mileage)-I could not say this is true without talking to a seasoned professional mechanic..You could try checking all vacuum hoses and tee fittngs, along with fuel pressure if you have a guage, also throttle position sensor could be acting out---no CEL???-50,000 is not a lot of miles, -I can't see having this kind of problem-maybe a couple of the guys more familiar with the 4.0 would be more help...
