Trailer Wiring Question

Ever since I got my truck, among a million other details, I've noticed that my truck does -not- have any sort of trailer hitch, but it -does- have a dangling connector for trailer use. Did Ford put trailer wiring on from the factory (either normally or as an option), and if I have that dangly wire dealie, is it safe to assume that it's connected into the other end and that I'd be ready to tow a trailer (electrically, at least; A trailer hitch would be helpful too )?

On some trucks they did have some wiring added, but it never was hooked up from the factory, they just taped it up in the harness. You had to dig it out and hook it up to use it.

Just take a good look at the plug hanging down. You will probably find tape and splices into the taillight wiring if the previous owner hooked it up.

It's never safe to assume anything with a 20+ yo truck. Like Franklin says, crawl under
there and take a look at it. My connector wasn't attached by cutting & splicing wires;
rather, it fits between two round connectors, I think they connect all the rear end lights
to the harness running down the length of the bed.

There were two types of Ford wiring for trailers back in the day.

One were Factory wiring, one was a dealer add on kit (either Ford or aftermarket).

The Factory wiring was 12 volt 7-wire sealed cable with connectors. Came with the Trailer special package, which included circuts for trailer brakes. Brake Controller had to be installed aftermarket.

Trailer Special Package A: (For Trailers 2000LBS and under)
  • Extra Engine Cooling
  • Heavy Duty Flashers
  • Wiring Harness
  • Argent Step Bumper
  • Trailer Special Emblem

Trailer Special Package B: (For Trailers up to 8500LBS)
  • Extra Engine Cooling
  • Heavy Duty Flasher
  • 60 Amp Altenator
  • 63 Amp Hr. Maitenance Free Battery
  • Oil Pressure Gauge
  • Ammeter Gauge
  • Bright Low Mount Recreation Mirrors (Swingaway) 9x6
  • Handling Package
  • External Transmission oil Cooler
  • Select Shift Automatic Transmission
  • Wiring Harness
  • Trailer Special Emblem

Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone, I guess the wiring isn't factory since I'm sure I don't have a trailer special. I'll crawl under there and look sometime, maybe when the ground stops being so cold, haha.
