Ok my work chebbie 1/2 ton overheated this morning. The temp just about reached 260 before I was able to shut it off. I am thinking thermostat but just want some confirmation. Here is some details.
Drove 30 miles in 4x4 when the light came on stating check eninge coolant temp. The them reached 260 degrees.
It was hot. Popped hood and found expansion tank fluid level in the normal hot level. (no coolant loss).
The water pump was not leaking.
The serpentine belt is intact and not slipping.
So that leads me to believe that I have s thermostat that is stuck closed.
If you check the radiator and it's down on coolant, the overflow bottle's hose might have a pinhole leak (lets coolant into the bottle when hot and air into the radiator as it cools).
Funny thing about chevy is there is no radiator cap. The top of the radiator is covered with a shield and there is nothing under that. So the only way to add fluid is through the expansion tank.
Also.....I have to find the thermostat first. The top radiator hose leads to an accessory on the front of the engine.
