I have a 1995 F-150XL 4x4 4.9L I6. I wanted to buy the Hypertech e-tuner for the truck, but realized most of the do it yourself tuners are for 1996 and up. I was kind of surprised considering I assumed the body and engine are the same for a 1995 F-150 XL 4x4 4.9L vs a 1996 of the same truck. I thought the 300 CI engines were the same for many years.
So I am assuming the computers changed between 1995 and 1996? If I got a 1996 computer out of a salvage yard and put it in would I be able to use all of the advertised 1996 and up hand held tuners? Or is this a complicated job? Maybe it would be easier to buy a 1996 of the same truck, but I like my 95' since it is in good shape.
I don't have much experience with this and any advice would be appreciated.
'96 was the year F150s went OBD-II, so although the engine itself didn't change the EFI system controlling it is totally different. The two systems are not interchangable at all, the OBD-II processor has 104 wires while the OBD-I has only 60, so you can't simply swap processors, the whole wiring harness along with additional sensors and solenoids would also have to be transferred.

Thanks Paul, I had a feeling the entire wiring harness would have to be changed. Too much expense for me to bother with.
