if you have issues with heat, denotation, high compression, or highly modified engine, or racing you may want a step or two colder plug. If you live in northern canada, you might want a hotter plug to keep engine efficency.

Ok, but I'm looking for a more technical definition. I guess I'm wondering what happens when you change heat range. I know that physically the insulator get progressively larger/smaller as heat range goes up/down, but I don't understand what actually happens to the ignition process and what issues/problems that may cause.
