ok need a little help guys. wanted to stick in the forum where i know everyone lol. my uncle called yesterday and asked me why his truck aint startin good. i know its a 7.3 SD dont know exact year. hes havin trouble startin it in the cold. he said the GP Relay is good or so he thinks and his relay for intake heater is bad. as far as i can remember the intake heater dont work unless you get to extreme cold like negatives. am i correct? what all should i check for on his rig? relay put out, gp, etc? how would i check them? any help is appreciated he uses the truck for his business so he wants me to see if i can figure somethin out in a timely manor. thank for any help guys
Ok, if the gp relay is good (how do you know?) But the gp relay is also easy to test. Check the resistance on the gp's. Pull off the harnesses that go into the valve covers. With key off, check the outermost lugs on each UVC harness, these are the gp wires. Using an ohmmeter to check them, they should read .1 to 2.0 ohms. Replace ones that read higher, but if only a couple read high I would change them all because you don't want to have to pull the valve covers again.
The GPR has 4 wires, the black/orange is your supply. Use a 12 volt tester on that wire, there should be constant power, key on or not. Now turn the key to start, you will hear it click, when it clicks on test the brown wire, if it has power the GPR is good. Most likely only gp's though.
Your welcome, everyone on here helps me out so when I see somethin I've already done I gotta help out with it. Good luck with it and let me know how it turns out.
