Our home was built in 1928...and it's been added on to a couple of times with varying degrees of craftsmanship....oh, it's cute enough.. I guess....we like it...1/3rd acre and so on...room for my Fords...
ANNYWAYS, the point is about the insurance is that we figured it has withstood many, many earthquakes here in Hollister, CA....that we decided to forego insurance.

Shake and Bake....
Isn't Hollister near Coalingua? Where the really bad quake happened? Nah, looks like about 100mi north.
I have to go to Salinas this weekend. I'll be almost in your hood.
The big worry on the older houses I think is falling of the raised foundations.

Yes, that's right..the foundation of this home...well it ain't exactly up to modern standards...and the floor is none too flat....part of it's charm I 'spose....
Going to Salinas? Take protection...lots of shootings in the rougher parts of town....when I go to that area.....I keep on going till I'm out of town..
Dented the fender of my 1966 Ford just before the 1989 Quake hit...where was I???? Downtown Salinas!! I was on the 101 between Gonzales and Soledad when that one hit....thought I had a flat or a fouled carburetor.
Regarding Earthquake preparedness....lots of canned goods, lots of water, and pray in advance for the health and welfare of man..After that....let it roll....insurance? Catch 22...high deductible...I think what? Those are like like 25 to 30K...about what it costs to get a 1600 sq. ft. house back up on to a foundation....

My wifes family lives there. They ARE the rougher part.
Unfortunately it's for a funeral, so it will be a quick turn around weekend.
but while we are off topic, i worked in salinas at he In N Out.....not a big fan of the city..... bill you taking the 5 to the 46 (i think its the 46) to the 101? or are you going to go the extra 50 miles and just head up the 101?
oh and we have done nothing for EQ protection, but we dont have much that could fall over. we have only one book case in the house that is free standing and it is in a bed room that is not being used.

I'll probably do one of each. Coming home Sunday we might do some of highway 1 to enjoy the view.
Was thinking of going up the I5 to Los Banos and cutting across on the 152, because I've never been that way. Any advice for or agin on that?
my parents do that when going to Santa Cruz, but when i was going to Monterey i would go 5 to 46 to 101 with the focus, but would go 101 with the truck, its a easier drive. i might have gone 152 once but i was coming from north of salinas when going home.
Coalinga = the town was named for the Southern Pacific's CoalingStationA.
That's right..Coaling Station A....
You know off topic here a bit...but the ride from Coalinga to King City (Hiway 198) is one of my favorites...along the way there's a cutoff to a dirt road to Parkfield...the center of the state where earthquake research is conducted....they've sunk probes deep into the earth...
Another cutoff along the is the skinny but 90% paved road (Strawberry Road?) going south takes you to Bradley, CA...god forsaken little town near San Miguel.....mission town..
Then just a bit past that little cutoff is Hiway 25...which takes you north into ....Hollister!
All of this area is god's kitchen....earthquake shake and bake..

Being a scrounger for decades, I always take the old roads, cuz you never know what you might find.
Driving the Interstates will get you there faster, but you prolly won't find diddly-squat.

What I can tell you is that you're adding about 70-90 miles to your trip...and about the middle of that stretch between 198 and 152 is when you get to second guessing your decision to leave home in the first place...
I've made that run, dozens of times traveling from the south to the north....and it's never, ever easy..
Best stay with the 101, 46, 5 path or 101 all da way.......
If you're adventurous though best take 58 W off the 5 lonely empty road that gets better and better till it drops you off on the 101 near San Luis Obispo....
