I have a 1994 F-250 with a 460 and I purchased a set of Hooker Super compatition headers for it. They came with gaskets for the headers adn collectors but I have heard that the gaskets manufactures send are junk. What do you guys think and recomend?
I have the same question...I have also heard of guys using two sets of copper gaskets with cheap headers and having no leaks. I got a decent set of headers ordered, so now the question is how to best get them to seal with no problems.
Just a note - my 94 F250 with 460 doesn't have gaskets on the exhaust manifolds. Apparently Ford thought their machining was accurate enough to not need them. I just wish they had done a better job with the 460's manifolds. They tend to warp and break the mounting bolts, leaving you with a nice leak! Let us know what you end up doing, so I will know what works when time comes to finally fix mine!
My manifolds have had gaskets added to them, apparently they leaked like crazy, 'cause there is some other welding done to the rest of the system too. Now after I spend some time towing a heavy load and get the engine good and heated up, the bolts work loose and the manifolds leak. I hate'em.
So what's the advice?
No gaskets with sealer?
Single gaskets? Stock, copper???
Double gaskets?
Gaskets and sealer?
I know some experienced gearheads know about this and can help.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 17-Nov-02 AT 07:46 PM (EST)]Put on a good quality with a "THICK" (3/4-1)flange on your headers. This will keep them from warping. Some of the headers I've seen have thin flanges and warp. I put Banks headers ( the complete pak) on my 97 460 MH and they work great. Banks is supposed to have an exact replacement for your vehicle if they make headers for it. No more cracked/broken studs for me.
