C-leigh, hows the idle with the 3500? I'm getting ready to stick a cam in my EFI 460 and whatever I use has got to have a pretty smooth idle.

This site has a bunch of auto calculators including one for mph, gear ratio, tire diameter and rpm calculations.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/calculat...-mph_rpm/a-gr/

Neil I would guess either your tach or your speedo is way off, using the one I linked above shows to be doing 4800 rpm at 65 mph with a 33" tire you would need 7.25:1 gears (double checked it with another site I use for calculators and came up with the same answer)

Now just playing with some numbers if you have 4.88 gears then at 65mph your rpms would be 3229, AND if by chance your tach is set for a 6 cyl it would read 3200rpm on a V8 as 4800 rpm so those numbers start getting closer. so what I would look for is if your tach is actually set for 6 cylinder operation, or is just for a 6 cylinder instead of for the 8.

Sorry for hijacking it again.

Oldracer,
Well, I'm confused now about the tach, but anyways, by the tach when its at 1000 rpm its smooth.
Now the other day for some reason it idle down around 700 & had just a slite lope to it, not anything like a race car, but just a little. Anything above that rpm though, its smooth as can be.
Got a more harder hit out the exhaust as well, sounds good.
I did do some cutting in the exhaust port, opened it up to increase & smooth out the flow, wouldnt call it a port job though.

When you ready to put that cam in, mop that tube of lube on the cam real good & put a big blobs on bottom of those lifters. Ol cam need all the help it can get right to start with keep it from wearing & get the bottle of ZDDP additive for the oil when you order the cam.

Excellent advice. And use Shell Rotella oil for break-in.

C Leigh - Thanks for the advice...I'll be sure to do that when i get to putting the cam in.

Jeeps&Fords - As for the Rotella oil for the break in..would you use just the straight 30 weight...or something else? I've always ran there 15-40 weight in both my Oldsmobile and I"ll be sure to start using it in this truck as well. I've always liked there oil.

Actually do to the new EPA emissions regulations the newer diesel rated oils have reduced zinc also, and it is not enough anymore. Here is one article discussing it

diesel

Monsterbaby,
I been meaning to ask, your avitar, you put that in to remind us, if we stick with Jackie D thats what we'll end up looking like.
ol Gentelman Jack.

Now you want to see a real tuff man, check his bag & see if he has Macnaughton, if so then hes grown up two times cause it takes a FULL grown man to drink that stuff.

MacNaughton's was the first whiskey I ever drank, I didn't think anyone even had heard of it.
Back in the 70s my grandfather worked for a trucking company based in Bremerton WA called Blackball frieght doing P&D. When a truck would get into a wreck the company would offer the load for sale for salvage at cost of the shipping costs, grandpa bought one of those trailers full, ended up with 18 CASES of 1/2 gallon bottles of MacNaughtons. When grandma sold the house and moved into a nursing home 5yrs ago there was still a couple cases left LOL
