Thats great It sounded like you didnt so much care about a "limousine" ride, just some hope of a little reliability. Yep, I have seen colors that even with the best imagination, did not appear to be the color on the schematic. Hope that "expensive' beast serves it purpose. LOL
Sorry for the double! Meant to ask you to please let us know how the PCM responds to this disconnect. I dont recall if the light on the stalk had flashed before. Apparently it will only kick a "soft code" and not trigger "limp home" mode------if anything.
I am really interested because I have wanted to do this to my bronco. Also really want to devise a strategy (parts or wires & switches) where my converter will only be unlocked at a dead stop idle-----sure dont want the thing locking up behind a volkswagon at a traffic light
So far I've put about 70 miles on and have had no problems. I'm not sure about soft codes, because the light on the stalk doesn't work at all, but I am getting all 4 gears, so it for sure has not tripped limp mode at all. It still shifts into 3rd early, but it's barely noticable without the torque converter locking up, so I'm happy with it in every way. Thanks again.
So I found this thread searching for "lockup disable" and I can say that benshere nailed it. I have a freshly rebuilt trans with a triple disc TC but the lockup was bugging me, it locks hard and bogs the engine driving around town. So I intercepted the purple/yellow wire in the main loom, under the cab on the drivers side. I cut the wire and used some speaker wire and a toggle switch to make a lockup disable switch. Works great, I can have the lockup for towing or highway driving and with a flip of the switch the TC lockup goes away for driving in town. I'll be watching the temps, pre-switch I'd run 150-160 max empty. I do have a v-10 cooler (enormous..) that keeps the temps low, so I'm not too worried. I'm thinking of changing the switch to a 3 position, and grounding the 3rd terminal, then I'd have a TC full lock-normal-unlock switch.
Update: I really like this mod. Truck feels much more lively in town without the TC lockup bogging the motor after every shift. Lost about 1 mpg, trans temps are about 20 deg higher. On the highway at 45-50 mph it is a bad deal, it's in OD but the TC slips a lot so temps rise pretty fast. But overall it's a good mod, you just gotta pay attention to temps.
