460 on PROPANE ?

I just picked up this `88 F350 4x4 w/new motor that needs to be hooked back up to get it running again, and the guy I bought it from said that when they re-built it they did the modifications to be able to use propane. What kind of mods would that be ? Also noticed the valve covers are center bolt and was wondering when they started doing that, and if there are any any other differences between the `88 long block and a my`76

Dont know the details about the lower end, but the heads on a propane engine, valves, valve seats & guides have to be made out of real hard material because of the high cumbustion chamber heat. Might be the reason the heads are different compaired to a regular 460.

the major difference betwen the 88 and 76 is that the 88 is externally balanced rotating assembly while the 76 is internally balanced. the 88 rotating assembly will fit into the 76 block as long as you swap the complete cranshaft assembly (flexplate, balancer and spacer with hatchet weight on it). the 76 crankshaft won't fit into the 88 block as the counterweights are too big and hit the block.

another thing i forgot to mention, if it is a 88 460 it was probably originally a fuel injected motor. they used different heads, intake and exhaust manifolds that won't interchange with the carb'd motors. the intake ports and exhaust ports are quite different between the two.

check the head casting number. i think something like a E7TE casting number is the efi heads, while D3VE or E6TE are the car'd heads. if someone has put a 4 bbl carb manifold onto the efi heads to convert it to propane, then you are going to have problems getting the engine to run. huge port mismatch that causes vacuum problems. that is maye another reason they couldn't get it going in the first place. check the casting number on the intake and let us know.

It`s got the fuel injection intake and most of the parts,I just have to sort it all out.I called the number on the reciept for the rebuild and the guy had a record of the build,it`s got a .030 over bore and turned crank, new valves etc. w/$1400 bill.I think I stole it for the $1000 I paid for the whole 4x4 truck .The guy that I got it from gave up on putting it back togrther.
