I drove an '89 SHO (first year introduced) 125Kmiles.
Don't confuse a 3.0 in a regular taurus with a SHO 3.0. They cost a mint to maintain, but there weren't many 5 passenger sedans, or coupes for that matter, that could outrun it. Had a 5 speed, a tuned suspension and boy was it fun to drive. But the clutch and transaxle were it's weakness. The OEM brakes were junk, as were all the other Taurus' My problems were plenty. The clutch case broke <10K miles. Went through a couple clutches while I had it. CPS failed at Crater Lake one summer. Don't even ask me about that one.
The SVT contour was a fun car, my son had a 2000 model. It was a blast to drive. Another fun car we had between my sons and myself, was an 88 black thunder bird turbo coupe with a 5-speed. I know exactly what, but my sons did some mods to it, I know some was a boost controler and 4:10 gears. It would out run 5.0 mustangs. I'm glad to hear that ford is going to do more with the SVT program again. Besides the fusion, I also read that the focus will get the SVT treatment again. So as of right now, we have the shelby mustang, F-150 raptor, fusion GT and SVT focus, thats a good start
