Changing 302 thermostat

Can anyone give me an easier way to change my thermostat? I can barely get a short open end wrench on the bottom bolt. I have to losen my distributor and take my belt off to get to the bottom one. It's an 89 model motor that I put an intake and carb on. I kept the serpintine belt system, so the thermostat housing may be in a slightly different place than with the EFI set up. I may be able to replace the hex head bolts with allen heads and gain some clearance. Anyone know the size and pitch of the bolts?

If it takes a 1/2" wrench the bolts are going to be 5/16-18. If it takes a 9/16 wrench, the bolts will be 3/8-16. I can't remember what size wrench fits.

Nah, I've tried my universal. My water pump for some reason, has a usless corner cast into it that covers about half of the bolt. I can see no reason what so ever for the corner other than for some finish machining operation at the factory. That's what's holding me back. That's why I think a set of allen head bolts will help me out.

We get into some tight places at work sometimes with a allen bolt and you can get the allen wrenches with the ***** on the end.

Yeah, that's what I'm hoping is gonna save my knuckles and patience. Changing a thermostat should not be this much of a headache.
