Trans pulling capacity

I have a 75 f 100 with a column mount 3 speed. I am thinking about pulling my Cavalier with it when I move (the car weighs around 2600 lb). The trip will be around 1000 miles and I'll end up in the hills in the South East. The little I have read about trans coolers, they seem to apply to automatics. If I can pull the car, I can make the trip with one less person. If I'll kill my trans, I'll take the extra person. What do ya think?

3 speed toploader is it? I wouldn't sweat pulling such a small load with it. The spread in the gears may be a bit of a pain if you've got a small engine in there but not significantly so with a light load. I wouldn't hesistate to pull that sort of load with a 3 speed toploader.

Oh, and yes trans coolers are only for slushboxes. Those of us with real transmissions don't have to worry about such things. I would recommend checking the gear oil in your trans and differential before towing, if you haven't checked it recently.

Thanks for the info cadunkle. Yea, I'm on top of the fluid levels, the rear seal in the tranny leaks a bit so I've got my finger in there every week or so. The leak isn't even measurable, just noticeable by the dark oil streaks (I'll get those 33 year old seals replaced someday). Differential is fine (and geared with 3.70, so I should have the torque). As far as the motor, I'm not worried. With my 300 I'm sure I'll get there... eventually. I'm know I'll use the truck lane on the right side on some of those inclines, smiling all the way.

Have you moved yet? Let us know how the trip went. I'm betting on the "300".

Nope, haven't moved yet. Probably won't 'till this summer but I'll post info about the trip. I guess since this thread has resurfaced I'll ask the same question with more details. My three on the tree is linked to the Ford side loader, not the bw top loader cadunkle was referring to. So- what will this trans handle?

A Ford three speed in 1975 would be the "303" top-loading, iron-cased trans.

The shifter is side mounted, with the shift shafts coming out the driver side of the box.

The gears are loaded via a tin cover on top.

BW boxes are side shifted as well, with the shift shafts coming through a cover bolted to the side. Gears are side loaded through this cover.

It's possible but not likely you have a BW box, but I think it would have to be a replacement, not factory. Either box will work for your tow.
