Sometimes in cold weather the blower does not come on for a while, It seems not until the engine warms up. Other times it is on as soon as I turn the key on.Is this a common problem? My truck a 99 F350 PSD. We have been getting as low a -45 here this winter.
The shaftof the blower may have grime and stuff built up on it stuck to the grease. As the truck warms up hot air flows into the chamber and "softens" the grease allowing it to spin. I had the same problem on a walk in van that I used to own. Cleaned it up with PB Blaster and then a few drops of 3 in 1 oil and she was good to go.
i know its not a ford.. but my s10 had a bad switch for the fan motor.. if it got bumped just the right way it wouldnt work.. even when switching between the other speeds... but sometimes itd work just like its suppose to... so i wouldnt totally count out a bad blower motor switch.. but jims answer there seems more plausable since he had similar problems to what your experiencing..
dose it just work on the high setting (fan speed) it could be the resister that is in the engine bay. its got two screws and a power plug pull it and see if the resister is burned up
Had the same problem this past spring in my '01. The blower motor was going bad. I replaced the motor and squirrel cage (they get brittle) and no more problems. The cost was not as bad as I thought. Dealer price was within $2.00 of Napa. Bumping the motor worked a few times, but it just had a mind of it own and worked when it wanted to.
My fan works on all speeds. I'm in a warmer climate now and the fan is OK, I think it probably needs a replacement befor next winter. I'm going to try a clean up with some WD40 first though. Thanks a lot everybody.
