help please

So I was cleaning the screen on the side of the fuel filter housing and dropped it in the valley not once but twice. I absolutely cannot find it this time. Can I use a water faucet screen or just run without it?

Havent pulled it yet. But the first time it was completely clogged with black, looked like old bearing grease. New screen in and it idled higher and fuel filter light went out. After 30 min of driving idle back low and rough and fuel filter light back on. so i assume it is the same problem.
