Cool Intermitent 4x4

I have a stock truck and a few months ago while up hunting I got stuck several times as it didn't seem the transfer case was engaging when I put it in 4 wheel drive. The dash lights indicated it was in but no drive was going to the front wheels. There was not eevn that tell tail clunk when putting it into 4 low. I took it to the dealer when I came back and they said they couldn't find anything. Again last night in the snow it did the same thing. Back wheels spinning and not drive to the front wheels but dash lights showed as being engaged. This is very frustrating as its not fun winching a truck this big around. Any ideas as to what might be the cause? Is there a specific sensor which engages the transfer case? Thanks For your help.

I take it this is a shift on the fly? If the hubs are still vacuum operated, perhaps one of the vacuum lines is leaking not allowing truck to engage front wheels? Over the years I have seen many people have problems with the hub lines, that would be my guess.

Yes it its a shift on the fly but it doesn't seem to matter whether I'm moving or still. The thing that gets me is the dash lights show everything has engaged fine.

Do you have the hubs that you can get out and lock manually? If so you probably have one of the seals leaking air or one of the palstic lines. My truck is the same way i just lock my hubs manually.

Yes I could manually lock the hubs but my thought is that its more the transfer case not engaging. It has always made some form a clunk when it engages into hi or low. This is absent when this happens. Where does the signal come from for the dash lights, is it from transfer case engagement or from hub engagement?

Mine has the electronic shift on the fly though mine doesnt make a sound when it engages it just turns the 4x4 hi or 4x4 low light on.and it will not go in 4x4 if i dont get out and enagage the hubs.Try manually enagaging them and let me know if it works then.If it does i can look up the vaccum schematic and possibly send it to you.

The light is just for the transfer case, If the hubs do not lick the light will still come on.

Lock the hubs by turning the dial clockwise, take it out to a parking lot, drive in circles, engage 4X4, you will feel it binding in 4X4. If that is working, then run the hubs in auto, and repeate the test. If it does not work with the hubs locked then check the fluid level in the tcase, and check the electrical conector. The light should not come on if the case did not shift. If the system works with the hubs locked but not auto, then you have a vaccume problem. There is a write up on how to fix this on the sight, just search for it.
