Should I pull my 22' Donzi Classic (about 4,500 lbs. w/ trailer) with OD on or off?
Pretty flat terrain, 2007 F-150, 5.4 w/ 3.55 axle ratio.
Also, I'm a bit nervous about what mpg while towing I'll get. My last truck was a Duramax 2500HD, and using the Tow/Haul feature I got a pretty respectable 16 mpg. Any predictions how my new setup will perform, fuel economy-wise?
First question is the tow mode a "true" tow/haul, or just a overdrive lockout? If its tow/haul, then by all means yes use it. If its just an OD lockout, next ask yourself does the transmission search for gears when you are driving? Ie switch between third and fourth every few tenths of a mile. If so, that's bad. Its not the RPM's which cause the problems, its the constant shifting and inability to stay locked in one gear under load. If it spends most of its time in OD then its not a problem to let it do so. The problem again is when the tranny is constantly shifting.
don't worry about the motor itself. I had the same motor in my 06 F250, it tends to like RPM's to do its work but it can take it, just drive the truck and enjoy.
As grafekie put it about the trans and you will be fine.
Thanks for the input. On my Cheby, the "Tow/Haul" adjusted the shift points according to the load. On the F-150 I believe the option is simply an "Overdrive Off" which locks you out of using it.
I'll listen for the "searching" of the tranny, and play it by ear next summer.
As said before, listen to the tranny, it will tell you if you need to turn off the overdrive
As for as MPG, I have a 30 footer (about 6500 lbs), I pull with a f250 5.4 373 gears
MPG is about 10
