External coil resistor
External coil resistor
I put a 98 GT302 in my truck with a carb and points. Can anyone tell me if I need a external resistor?? I was told I should use one and I did. Now here comes the fun. When the weather is really cold, the truck won't start. Spins like mad no fire. I put my charger on the hot side of the coil and it will start before you can take your finger off the button. Disconnect the charger and the truck keeps running. Once hot no problems the rest of the day.
Next day samething. I put a test light on coil hot and it shows power, push button just spins. I jumpered the resistor and it starts right up. Take of jumper and it keeps running.
At the beginning I put in the breakerless ignition.
Burned up two sets, that is why points. Awaiting your expertice on this one.

Ah, because it was originally electronic ignition of some kind, the starter solenoid (if there is one) would have only one small terminal which is the engage circuit from the starter switch. The point type solenoid has as a seconded small wire that is a 12 volt bypass to the coil for starting purposes (just like you are doing with your charger) and it then goes back to resistor current (so that the points don’t burn) as it should.
Maybe!
