When I bought my 2000 PSD 4x4 Excursion in 2007, the previous owner had installed a Fabtech 3.5" Hanger System with a 2" rear block. I think this is pretty close to the stock 250 height. He also changed the the rims to Centerlines and the tires to BFGoodrich 35x12.50x16.5. The front tires rub the fender a little in a tight turn going over a bump but the rubbing doesn't bother me to much. However, I am wondering how bad the towing performance will be if I tow a heavy trailer (10,000 lbs) with stock 3.7 gears. Right now, I tow a 5,000 lbs boat and haven't had any peformance problems.
Since I need new tires in the rear, I am contemplating if I should just step it down a little for towing. If so what size tires would work good for towing heavy and look good with my lift?
The other side of the coin is that I only have about 5,000 miles on the front tires (Pepboys paid for them since they ruined the old ones taking them off the rims) so it would be cheaper to just buy the same size rear tires. Does anyone on the boards tow heavy with 35" tires? If so what are your thoughts?
Here's a picture of the truck just before I bought it.
I took my 35's off when I started doing a lot of towing. The fact that they looked great didn't make up for the fact that they changed my gearing too much to get in the power band of the motor. I have a 6 speed with the 3.73 gears so I don't know how it is with the auto, but in OD at 65 mph I was at 1800-1900 rpms and power and fuel mileage sucked. If I went into 4th gear I was at 55 mph and 2500+ rpms, good fuel economy but too slow for the interstate.
I went to 285's and like them better. The 265's would be better yet, but I don't like the look of the "small" tires on the F350. Yours looks like it sets about as high as my truck, 285's would look good on yours,it just depends how much you have to spend right now, 2 tires vs. 4 tires.
Hope this has helped you.
