no tuner here, all stock except for the air filter and exhaust.
Hey Tom, i would defintly do what the guys said above about cleaning the EBPS tube, Dan got the link for you. I cleaned mine and it had some soot in the bends but mostly towards the end. Its a rule out fix and it could help. Gottya on the no tuner..
Like the other guys said, clean or replace the tube. Mine was almost completely plugged so I made a new one. Helped my mpg. With winter, your tire pressure goes down. Make sure you have the recommended psi. Keep the rpm's below 2k. Keep us updated.
One thing that made a big difference in mileage for me was sealing the up pipes. Bought me 1.5-2 mpg.
Mileage is still pretty low, 4.88's and a 10k truck aren't famous for good fuel economy.
And I think you have a boost leak somewhere with your boost gauge flicking like that. Possibly a loose clamp or maybe a plenum gasket has lost it's seal.
well, stage one in the MPG fix was done today. it finally stopped raining, and the temps were around 31º,
so i got the new fuel filter put in.
YUCK!!! it looks like it is the original filter in there!!!
the pre filter was black, and there was "mud" dripping off of it when i pulled it out.
the filter itself was almost as bad.
i ended up sucking all the fuel out of the bowl, and wiping it clean, then filling it up with MACS 9600 (because i couldn't find any DK in the garage), and took it for a fill up and spin around town. i reset the overhead console, and put it through the paces.
results are::
beating the snot out of it, it has more getup and go.
and the mileage is sitting rite at 14.6, where before the filter change, this kind of driving would result in a single digit reading.
so all in all, i am a bit happier.
now all i got to do is the CCV mod, check for plenum leaks, check the EBPS tube, and put new boots on it.
Not good on the filter Tom. Remember those fuel injectors are around $300 ea. so you might want to pay a bit more attention to the change interval. Geno's garage has a good price on the Racor filters if you decide to stock up while this is fresh on your mind.
Just make sure not to lose the old cap in case you switch back to the other style.
Keep an eye on the new filter. If it starts to get dirty real fast, you might need to drop the tank and clean the screens in the mixing chamber. If there's junk in the tank, the screens may be partially plugged and you may have a fuel restriction. Might be a good time for the in tank mods if you drop the tank. the old cap and prefilter are on the shelf as keepers. i never toss parts like that ,so i still have it just in case the "newfangled" stuff is not as new and improved as they thought it was.
cleaning the tank is a thought that came to mind as soon as i saw the filter condition. if the new one is just as dirty in 5k miles, out comes the tank.
And something else to consider. If you're not going more than 25 miles from home, you're probably not doing a lot of highway miles. The diesel is most efficient when it's up to full operating temp holding a steady speed.
If you're doing a lot of stop and go driving, and you're tach is going over 2,000 rpm's while you accelerate, that can explain the poor mileage.
I think Chris has it right here.. My truck averages 11.00 to 10 mpg in the winter.. I drive 11 miles to work, and have a stop light every half mile.. .. IN the summer, I am between 12 and 13 in the city.. If I get the chance to do mix.. I might get up to 14.. On the expressway.. I between 15 and 16 in the winter, 15.5 to 17mpg in the summer..I know it doesnt make you feel better.. might let you know you are not alone though..
Hey Dan, would you mind saying more about how you sealed the up pipes?
Thanks
Look for leaks where the up pipes connect behind the turbo. Hard to see, but there will be black streaks on the pipes or firewall if you have a leak. Replacing the donut gaskets or installing bellowed up pipes will fix the leak.
