Sanderson Headers - w/o gaskets

I've given up on the Dynojunk headers for my 390 FE motor in 67 F100, ports of headers smaller than ports in heads, etc. Saw on an old thread -18 Nov, stephenw- that he'd used Sanderson, so I researched a little, Hedman said can't use front sway bar (which makes no sense at all, plus it looks like they don't have starter issues, so I ordered them. They don't want you to use gaskets!!!??! They recommend a hi-temp silicone, thge nice lady was going to throw in a tube. I'm wondering if anyone has used Sanderson, and if they did or didn't use gaskets, any feedback on this for an FE motor would be appreciated they'll be here in a couple days. Thanks, Trevor the CACWBY in WI.

Sanderson Headers - w/o gaskets

Cowboy,
I have been thru about 4 generations of install on mine now, due to all the problems I've had with my new 410. Started with nothing but some Permatex "Right Stuff" applied sparingly. That burned out pretty quickly because I had a problem with too lean on mixture. So went back in with copper gaskets after working on the mixture, and they seemed to be working fine until I had to pull the engine again with blown head gasket and oil leak. Went back in the 3rd time with another set of coppers, and "thought" I was having a problem with port leaks but turned out to be a latent burned weld on the collector. Got the collector re-welded, and header re-faced and re-coated, and decided to try to use the Fel-Pro fiber-type gasket. That seemed to work the best for me, until of course I pulled the engine again because of broken rings (detonation). Just got it all put together again this afternoon, and I am used the fiber gaskets again. One caution tho is that I had to elongate the bolt holes in order to drop the gasket down to match up right to the Edel heads. In retrospect I guess I am a bit nervous about taking any chances on leaking against the aluminum heads, so that's probably flavored my thinking about using gaskets.
Good Luck, Steve

Trevor,

Have you put the Sandersons on yet? I was looking at their website and did not find a listing for the 390. What was your part number? Did they clear the starter OK? If you have power steering, was that cleared ok as well?

Interested to see how it goes for you.

Thanks

The Sanderson part # is FF427, they claim for FE motor in trucks 1953 up, which seemed pretty broad.

And they came in and it did not go well, not going to be able to use them, they sent Two passenger sides, but the header ports are shorter than exhaust ports of heads, and fit very snug against oil pan. So I'm still the "headerless" CACWBY.

Sanderson Headers - w/o gaskets

Sorry to hear that you had problems. I will be interested to hear how it progresses. Are you planning to see if Sanderson can make you a proper set?

Keep us posted.

Thanks,
Pat
